Rest In Peace Doggy aka Spike

16 Jun

I haven’t posted anything about Spike, or more affectionately known as Doggy for quite some time now.

I mentioned back in 27 October last year that he’d gotten very old. But it was really this year that his health had really deteriorated. Couldn’t walk, couldn’t see, couldn’t hear.. it was just too much. But after over 15 years of being with us, the sickness that comes with old age were all expected, right?

When he had quite a bad fall a couple of months ago as well, we all thought it would be the end of him. But nope, he fought through it, and even managed to walk (somewhat) after that!

Amazing. A real fighter he was.

Then came late May/early June. He was already in pain on his legs, and then had another nasty fall in one of our drains, and one of his back leg was stuck inside the drain. He couldn’t get up. Luckily I went to check on him late that night; otherwise he would’ve just gotten stuck there, and we wouldn’t know he was there. I quickly called my brother and a relative who was staying at our house to help me carry him out. They did, and since then, Doggy just ended up sleeping on the floor, not able to walk anymore, with us feeding him wherever he was.

He suffered a stroke too in early June. So he couldn’t stand, let alone walk, with his head paralyzed. It was so painful to watch.

We really thought he would be up in Doggy heaven even before my wedding (his condition was that bad), but surprisingly, he fought hard to stay alive, even a couple more days after the wedding!

I had actually wanted to put him to sleep before the wedding (since he was whining/crying so much) but everyone told me it would be considered bad luck to do so before the wedding, so we didn’t. We felt so bad to have him endure the pain for so long.

I especially bought his favourite dog meat from Merdeka Supermarket, since he won’t eat other types of food, and rice was just too messy for him to eat (since he couldn’t sit up and eat properly anymore). I fed him as many times as I could, and we had to give him water via injection. Mind you, his appetite was still quite strong right up til’ the end!

Sigh.

So on 14th June 2011, we’ve all decided that enough is enough. It was too heartbreaking to hear him cry so much, so mom and younger bro brought him to the vet to be put down. I had to stay home though, as I was still on “pantang” mode thus couldn’t join them.

I managed to say goodbye to him at the car and talked to him a few minutes before they left, and as usual, he tried to move whenever I stroked his face. I knew he wanted to see me because he tried to turn to my side several times, but due to his paralyzed head, he couldn’t do it properly.

I only wished I could’ve hugged and kissed him one final time like how I used to many, many times before he was put to sleep. :(

Rest in Peace my dear Doggy. You’re no longer in pain now. Run as much as possible up there in doggy heaven with your pal Bruno. Thank you for staying alive during my big day. I know you were fighting against the pain, but it meant a lot to me that you were still alive somewhat. Made me feel like you were also there on my big day.

You sure had lived an awesome life. Definitely a part of the family.

Will forever miss seeing your ever-smiling face greeting us in front of the house.

Lotsa hugs and kisses for you. RIP.

Spike had lived well. 15 years is very long in a dog’s world. RIP Spike. You’re in good hands now.
