Daily Express last Saturday. I, like Julian, didn’t expect it to appear the next day! That was fast!! So that was a surprise no.1.

Surprise no.2 was the title. OMG! It’s true what they say about reporters tend to twist what you say! And like what Julian said, we said we have no plans of forming an association at all as we don’t see the need to do so. But what d’ya know.. the headlines stated otherwise! Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!

Surprise no.3 was obviously my blog URL. I actually did spelt my blog url out to him, as in C-A-N-E-E-L-I-E-A.com, twice! And he still got it wrong! Argh!

Surprise no.4: as soon as I reached Shana’s house, I was greeted with, “Hey, you’re the girl in the newspaper today!” by Shana’s dad! LOL!

I was SO glad that I didn’t say much during the interview, because I was really afraid that whatever I say would turn out something else instead. That’s why you didn’t read any quote from me in the article! Muahaha!

But on a serious note guys, we seriously aren’t planning on forming any association. Blog is a place where you express your opinion! And by forming or joining an association would certainly ruin that blogging feeling, right??

So for me, NAY for bloggers association!

alalala this is wrong..Hmm have to call and correct them jacq aiseh..

  2. Lorna Says:

I was oh so tekejut when I read the headline! Hmm, susah lah false news like that.

  3. Lorna Says:

BTW Jacq, that’s why la you, have too many “e” in your URL… just like mine have too many “r”. Three’s a crowd, they say!
    LOL!

  4. drizad Says:

itulah pasal… never trust reporters. they just write what they like to write. you can actually saman these people on delivering false information.

  5. Bernard Says:

I also thought that, how come we, bloggers in KK want to have an association? LOL. Media always make up stories so that their paper/article sells.

  6. Gallivanter Says:

The cool part is, that you appeared in the newspaper, which would have some affects on blogs that are not linked to any of us, but so uncool that they got ur addy wrong. YIDIOTS!!

  7. edgar Says:

forming a blogger association just beats the point of being a blogger. nuff said..

  8. massy Says:

GG after spelling it out twice pun masih salah..maybe u should have a recording, hey ppl won’t go wrong with record and spell it out? @_@

  9. Shana Says:

jacq, better u call them up ,nanti dlm newspaper ada tu kena tulis “RALAT ,http://caneeliea.com/” hehhe

  10. papajoneh Says:

cool the faces appeared in the newspaper but totally messed up the details. Thats why i dont read newspaper. I read blogs to tell me the truth.
Call them Jacq n tell them about this.
I know *the reporter*, my schoolmate but better you call to tell the truth.

  11. Kay Kastum Says:

Famous sudah kau ni. Now can demand bah.. ask them to do a front page apology with a correct url besar-besar. He…he..

  12. 1earth Says:

Hehe - saying “we’re not forming an association” is probably not news worthy enough.

In fact, most things are not news worthy, so I guess to make it newsworthy sometimes the media bends it a little, brighten it up a little and sometimes twist it until its neck nearly breaks off, as long as it still hangs there and is readable.

And if anything, I’m sure their circulation increased by a few hundred that day because of the many bloggers that suddenly bought the newspaper for that headline.

  13. pemudasabah Says:

That’s why i’m all out for not forming any associations for bloggers especially Sabahan. It might have hidden agenda, i’m afraid. We bloggers should be free to express our belief and feelings with restriction to our own religion,of course.

    Anyway be good ok.

  14. chegu carol Says:

I read the news when i was in KP and was quite taken aback with the headline too. Sabahan Bloggers? An association? I mean…if it is really in the plan, you guys would have said something before going to the press maa right?

  15. Shemah Says:

Well, at least all of you looked good!! That’s always a plus!! Tapi minusnya… they kasi wrong url (i didn’t notice it actually.. ) and the fact that wrong content bidak lah jugak kan.. :( tsk tsk tsk.

  16. ben Says:

I’ll let *the reporter* know about this post and see what that person says.

  17. BLue Says:

    BLoggers unite!

  18. ben Says:

I already contacted *the reporter* and in gist here’s what that person replied. BTW, I am not siding with anybody, just telling it as it is. For further discussion on this you might want to contact the reporter yourself:

    - we (DE) are not about twisting things and words.
    - that person stand to gain nothing for twisting anybody’s words.
    - that person’s very sure (and jotted down for good measure) one of the 3 persons said, at the end of the interview: “yes that is why we think an association is good ….”. However, in the earlier part of the interview the other two had said that they are not planning.
    - that person was working on other stories that day hence spelling errors (typos) are bound to happen
    - news reported in blogs are not all true while news reported in newspapers are not all false
    - always remember the Malay saying that goes something like “kuman yang bertapuk di belakang batu kena tutup daun kelapa boleh nampak tapi gajah depan mata sendiri tak nampak atau buat buat tak nampak”

  19. Wei Chuen Says:

Wow ben.. you are very resourceful. Next time if I have a problem with the public toilets, I know who to look for..

  20. Crystal Says:

Duh! You guys should go directly to DE and clarify instead of ‘kutuk mengutuk’! Support la our local papers. IF they have misinterpreted or delivered the messages wrongly, apa susah pigi kastau seja? Datang interview senang, but once report keluar bukan main lagi bah. Well, I’m not a reporter, but appreciate juga bah their hard work. Sabah is not big, so, pusing2 pun di ’sini’ juga bah bejumpa.

Betul juga la “gajah depan mata pun nda nampak”. Ya lah, as a blogger myself, bannnnyyyaaakkkk… sia baca posts with catchy titles, and then, ntah betul or not coz ramai yang buat blog advertising, blogging for money, but still urang mo baca kan. Your own blog, suka hati la what you’re intend to write, but fikir bah, our local papers bukan bodoh mo kasi sampai false news unless terrr silap or typo. Yang suka2 cakap pasal saman tu, investigate dulu. At least dorang show interests bah mo kasi expose Sabahan Bloggers.

Haiya, about your URL salah pun, bulih kasi betul bah, See, sia pun bulih sampai sini blog biar pun URL silap type he he… Power word of mouth.

  21. JACQ Says:

Wow! All you guys sound so serious! I really didn’t expect to read these kinds of comments!

bennyliew.com, as it was already in the past, I’m not go back to them and demand a re-print of some sort to change the header or for the typos. Saying it in my blog is enough.

Lorna, I think maybe the reporter misinterpreted one of us talking about an online community with an association instead lah.. Can you really call it false news kah tu ah? And yes, I love all my ‘e’ in my nick like you! Unique mah! LOL!

drizad, no lah, cannot say like that.. I myself still read newspaper on a daily basis for local happenings and such. And terlampau juga until wanna saman people.. This is supposed to be a light-hearted article in the newspaper lah.. No need so serious!

Bernard, well.. community yes. Not association though.. Well, not for me in the near future anyway hehe..

Gallivanter, yes and we appreciate them for getting in touch with us and wanting to do this article on Sabahan bloggers. I just hope that those who can’t find my blog will at least Google me up hehe..

    edgar, exactly.

massy, I’m not sure.. will that work? LOL!

    Shana, what’s RALAT gurl? *blur*

papajoneh, that would make us look like idiots if we do that, don’t ya think? Saying it here on my blog is good enough for me..

    Kay Kastum, yalah tu LOL!

  22. JACQ Says:

1earth, yup. Totally agree with ya. And I like how you describe the media: “sometimes the media bends it a little, brighten it up a little and sometimes twist it until its neck nearly breaks off, as long as it still hangs there and is readable”. Hehe..

    pemudaSabah, yea…

chegu carol, trust me, we’d surely be asking all you bloggers first about things like this!

Shemah, yes, and they’re generous enough to put our pic up really big too LOL!

    BLue, yeah bebeh! ;)

ben, wow you kasi batu api to *the reporter* kah ni?? LOL! Okay, the quoted part at the end of the interview was definitely not me haha! And like I’ve said before, maybe that person misinterpreted the ‘association’ with community instead?

    Wei Chuen, bebeh.. behave! LOL!

Crystal, it would be an idiotic and childish move to go back to them and demanded a ‘corrected’ re-print of the article. And my post wasn’t meant as a way of ‘mengutuk’ at all, as you put it. I was simply expressing what I thought, that’s all. Sorry if you guys see it as a very negative post. And FYI, yes, I do read DE as well as other local newspapers on a daily basis, tq very much. Btw, you didn’t put your blog url here? You’ll be famous too after that comment! Hehe..

  23. papajoneh Says:

Good that Ben contacted *the reporter* and quoted here that person’s reply.

And “NO” JACQ … I THINK you will not look as idiot contacting them saying the detail is wrong. That is what I typed up there. “Call them Jacq n tell them about this”.

However asking for reprint probably too much but it is still possible. and I didn’t ask you to do that from the above comment ;)

Whatever it is, its settled already. All go back to blogging. Peace to all Sabahans.

  24. Crystal Says:

Nah, see you pun suda misinterpreted my comment he he… Teda pula I asked you to demand for re-print and btw, it’s not an idiotic or childish move. If you know your rights… you should instead of misleading other people’s mind when reading your post sampai part ‘mengutuk’ dalam komen. Bah, telebih suda sya cakap cam tu kan. Well, I know your post meant well, biasa la mo express tidak puas hati kan *wink*. Anyway, nda mo la published my url coz I’m happy the way it is. No publicity. :) OK! My apology if ada tersilap cakap k… :)

  25. Shemah Says:

Ya bah Jacq.. Like the Joker said, “Why sooo serioouuus??” LOL!

Well, if you want my honest opinion?

The title did say “My Take on the Sabah Bloggers Newspaper ARTICLE”. It didn’t say “My Take on the Daily Express and It’s Reporters”.

And if it indeed was wrong content due to misunderstanding or typo or whatever.. just apologize. No need to justify by saying too many articles that day to write hence the typo and berperibahasa gajah2 kan?

As a blogger pun, kalau kita tersalah tulis, pun we apologize to all those affected by our post. Jacq was just trying to clear the air and get the facts straight, that NO bloggers associations are in plan to be made and didn’t mean any malicious intent with her blog post.

If others comments pun yang mengutuk, that doesn’t represent Jacq’s own views on it. So Crystal when you said her post misleads other people’s mind that leads them to mengutuk, is that a misinterpretation on your part? Because I don’t seem to feel that it misleads my mind.

In fact, DE is sent to my house every morning and not planning to stop it anytime soon.

Anyways, take it easy people.. don’t get your panties/briefs/boxers/thongs up in a bunch over this.. :D I know mine isn’t! ;)

  26. JACQ Says:

papajoneh, yes papaj. Peace everyone! Hehe..

Crystal, ok, no more hard feelings. Peace? :)

Shemah, U helped me clear the air! Muchas gracias gurl! :)

  27. Unfiltered Says:

Firstly, kudos to all the Sabahan bloggers who actually could teamed up and commented on the recent article by *the reporter* (let me see, dated on Aug 23, PAGE 5 in DAILY EXPRESS). The last time I checked, it’s not that easy to get the Sabahan youths to get together and have a unanimous say on this kinda topic - or should I say issue? (I dunno, whatever the interpretation is or are). Wow, it’s true what they say that Sabah has evolved - no?

    Anyway, my two cents worth…

Coming from someone with a not-so-many-years-of-experience in Public Relations and Journalism: Unlike BLOGGING (which you can write whatever angles that you like or feel like - don’t mind me, I blog too), reporting for main stream media (in this case, the Daily Express)is by any right, at the discretion of the writer/editor (in this case, *the reporter*). A Writer/Editor does not simply write article which he/she thinks is not news worthy…oh let me emphasize that phrase again, NOT NEWS WORTHY. Hence, there may be reasons of why he did not write about the story which you and your other fellow bloggers wish to talk about (yea maybe in this case, you were hoping he’ll write about the Sabahan Bloggers Gathering which was held like on the first week of August). And when was the interview with DE being conducted again? Oh yea, just last week. Tell me Caneelia, or Canneellia, or Canelia, or whatever the spelling is, do you think a news can still be called “news” if the event happened like 3 weeks ago? I mean, coming from someone who read the newspapers regularly, I read them every morning before I start my day and of course I expect to read about current news/stories/issues. Stories about event that happened like last Christmas? Errr maybe not. Maybe I’ll turn to blogs instead.

Oh and yea, just a tip on Media Interview: If you happen to be the spokeperson that represents your… be it an association/organization/agency/company and the likes, make sure you are 100% prepared for the interview. Anticipate questions from the reporter. His/her job is to report whatever inputs he get from the interviewee. And I must say, by keeping your mouth shut because you are scared that you say the wrong things during the interview - is not really a smart thing to do lah. Might as well you don’t join the interview and let the other two boys do the honor of answering questions. Or maybe you just want be in the picture? I don’t know. Well, the reporter definitely can be trusted when it comes to publishing picture isn’t it?

So, my point it, the writer of this article was not twisting nor trying to write false news (did I mention the Public Relations value that you get from this big piece of article?). I strongly believe that he/she is just justifying their job - to write an article which is newsworthy (and with QUALITY) and which actually came out on PAGE 5 in DAILY EXPRESS. From what I know, in order to get into the main papers nowadays, you either have to be strongly associated to politics or you are involve in crime.

So respect his/her work and leave it be. And what’s wrong with the headline? “Sabahan Bloggers Plan Association”. I thought association means the process of forming mental connections or bonds between sensations, ideas, or memories — Big DUH here, isn’t that what you all fellow bloggers are doing?

Well I really hope none of the Sabahan bloggers spoil the reputation of the other Sabahan bloggers (which some of them happened to be my good friends and family and they actually write some good sh*t now and then - contents with quality) by writing something crappy and without any concrete base for arguments.

An issue is not an issue until you want it to be an issue. One should refer and get inspired by other well-known bloggers’ blogs first before deciding to write one’s own. How sad I must say.

Have a nice day my fellow Sabahans :)

Oh and yea, did I mention that *the reporter* is my brother?

  28. JACQ Says:

Unfiltered, Ouch. Such a negative comment.. and sounded really personal too. After I thought the water has calmed in here! Sheesh..

Well lemme see.. firstly, if you can READ, you can obviously see that my blog is spelt as Caneeliea okay? No need to guess like what you did in your comment above. And yes, if I had known the interview was gonna be like that, I wouldn’t have gone, trust me!

“Or maybe you just want be in the picture?” Again, we all thought he was at least gonna ask us some questions about the SBG, which we only found out during the interview itself that it was hardly about that at all.

And by you giving your really personal 2 cents here is blowing this matter even bigger, you realised that?

And yes, I also do know *the reporter* is your brother, ECHA. Found that out on the interview day itself actually. Again, I’m sorry if you (and everyone else) think this post sounded negative. It wasn’t meant to be at all.

  29. weichuen Says:

Wah! why so serious! I thought blog should be free and easy in expressing our views. Guys, we Sabahans are peaceful people. FYI,I love reading DE and I believe *the reporter* is doing a good job in their work. So guys, relaxxx……

  30. Crystal Says:

OK no hard feelings… but Shemah, not on my part. TOTALLY no misinterpretation. It’s very obvious if you read other comments lah… BAH, sepa yang mo apologize di sini? Main post2 di blog, but never go directly to DE. It’s so unprofessional kan posting about this and then sounded too personal and thousands of bloggers might be reading this blog especially from other countries. THINK of the consequences to other bloggers from Sabah! Case like this is VERRRRRYYYYY sensitive if it involves media. So, be VERRRRRRRRYYYYY certain before you write. Ada yang kena ban nanti. K. Peace!

  31. Gallivanter Says:

Crystal and Echa, you both have your valid points, and Jacq has her valid points too. If we continue debating about this, it will never end. I think *the reporter* did a good job on the writeup, especially to give Sabah bloggers some exposure - which is ultimately, the objective.

Personally, I would have contacted *the reporter* of DE to clarify the matter as I know that reporters tend to sensationalize - fact. It is part of their job, to sensationalize news, otherwise we all might as well watch RTM to cure our insomnia. Cue Hasbullah Awang. Having said that, the clarification could also either go somewhere or nowhere.

I’m guessing that the word “association” here may be taken out of context. There is the “A formal organization of people or groups of people” or “A social relation resulting from interaction”. Hence, it depends on how one perceives it, and we, as humans, always prefer to look at the negative angle, from where we stand. Human nature bah.

While some of us feel that what Jacq posted is morally wrong and she should be banished to Timbuktu to join Michael Jackson, it is ultimately her prerogative. If she wants to criticize or offer constructive criticism or support Anwar (Ole!), that’s her choice. What is wrong in our eyes may not be wrong in hers. Sure, we can go on and on and on arguing this matter, but there’s never a RIGHT solution. We are all not righteous people else we’d be preaching the religion and be society’s moral police.

Reporters are entitled to their discretion, yes, I acknowledged that to an extent, hence the fine line of what makes tabloids and newspapers - however, there’s no smoke without fire (and I love English tabloids for their football news!). If this is Jacq’s take on it, that’s her discretion too, while some of us agree to disagree, it is ultimately her views, just like the reporter.

Anyway, I hope we all could move on from this, with a pinch of salt or sugar or guinness stout, to move forward together to support Anwar Ibrahim! :-)

    One love. :-)

  32. Jewelle Says:

Wow, this is getting way too interesting lah!

Seriously I think Jacq has the right to say what she said. This is her personal blog and that is her personal choice. Besides, I really don’t see what she said that is so wrong to make some of us very angry.

    Relaxlah!

Anyone in their right mind would raise these discrepancies - wrong name spelling and misinterpretations on what 3 people said etc. And as to how these issues were raised (public posting instead of contacting the said reporter)…maybe we have forgotten that we are dealing with bloggers and this is how some bloggers vent their feelings :-) Which is again, their personal choice.

Perhaps things get a bit more exciting when the reporter’s name was mentioned and his professionalism was questioned - but in all fairness, these were said by other commenters.

So it is out of line to bash the bloggers’ integrity - joining the interview to have her picture inside or ridiculing the bloggers when they are not familiar with standard Media Interview or worse, demanding that no one should blog if they can’t blog like “the well known ones”.

Or maybe the non-bloggers forgot that blogging is an expression of one’s freedom of speech, regardless of the “quality of the content” or the “news worthiness” or “sale-ability”

So let’s just put this behind us and continue to blog or read blog :-)

  33. JACQ Says:

Guys, this is really getting out of hand, and I’ve had enough of this. I never meant for this post to offend anybody, and I’m sorry to those whom I’ve offended.

I’m gonna close this comment box now guys.

Thank you to those who have tried to defend on my behalf (like Shemah, Gallivanter, and Jewelle), appreciate it a lot. You guys rock! *hugz*
