I Attended The Freedom Of Entry Ceremony

27 Apr

This year, WC and I managed to attend the night ceremony of the Freedom Of Entry event, which was held on Saturday night at the Padang Merdeka, thanks to Impedius and Amie. (some pics taken by her from this event *here*)

What is this Freedom Of Entry Ceremony, you ask?

Well, according to STB:

freedom-of-entry.jpgThe “Freedom of Entry Ceremony” is an old Naval Tradition that began during the medieval times, where the City or town council confers the right of the “Navy” to march with “Swords drawn, drums beating, band playing, colours flying and bayonets fixed”. The right to march through is usually conferred with a “Scroll” by the Lord Mayor. The ‘Scroll’ will then allow the Navy to exercise its newly conferred right to march through the city. The Colours are of great significance to each and every sailor, representing the central rallying point in battle in the event that they are separated from their colleagues during the melee.

This tradition signifies the true bonds of friendship, and often the expectation that the Navy whom the honour was bestowed upon would assist in the defence of the City. The Navy is then bound to protect the city from any invasion or attack………”

Anyways!

We only attended the night ceremony of this event. I seriously didn’t know anything about this, mainly because I didn’t see anybody blogging about this event before! (or maybe I missed the posts from those who did blogged about it, huh?)

Whatever lah. Pics time!

Ready! Set! Shoot! (pic credits to WC)

The place was not crowded at all. Where WAS everyone??

And thanks to JulianSabah, Amie, Impedius, WC, and I got to take pics somewhere near the stage! (we could’ve went closer though (as per the suggestions of the guards nearby), but shy lah to take pics so close to the stage! heh..

The MC for the night ceremony, and the actual view of the stage from where we were at

My best friend for the night were my A200 and my KM70210 f4-5.6 lens. Most of the pics I took were blur, mainly because my hands weren’t steady.. (and on some of the pics, I turned off the Super SteadyShot function to see how blur the pic would be)

Pics of some of the performers before the fireworks show:

Don’t know the names

The Sudirman impersonator (he did sound a bit like the real late singer), and I don’t know who again

Clipboard2
The local “Tom Jones” (that’s what the MC said lah), and another singer whose name I don’t know

Then, about 15 minutes before 10pm, we all headed out towards the parking lot near Gaya Street to get a good spot for the fireworks display. We ended up setting camp somewhere near the library.

I seriously wasn’t ready for the display, and it was up and firing while I was getting my camera on my tripod, and my tripod chose that exact moment to get it stuck and wouldn’t lock in properly! So I missed a few minutes of the fireworks show! Argh!!)

So no tripod, not enough time to set my manual mode to BULB, only managed to play with the shutter speed.

Oh, and and super low fireworks didn’t help too! We couldn’t see it from where we were as the trees were blocking it! Buruk!

So in the end, this is the only one that I managed to take that was nice enough:

First Time In Taking Fireworks Too!
Pathetic, right? Yeah well, the fireworks show were nothing to brag about, either..

And when it ended, everybody was still waiting for more to come. We were seriously disappointed at the fireworks show! Boo!

One for me, one for Amie, and another for..? ;)

Thank gawd for the ice-cream truck nearby! We cooled off quickly after having some! Yum-yum!

Oh, as usual, Impedius did a video clip of this outing!

Go on! Watch it! ;)

I think I had a run-in with that local Tom Jones 15 years ago before we went up onstage for my first and only Battle of the Bands competition at the now defunct Tiffiny nightclub at Karamunsing warehouse. A few years later, in another chance encounter, I defeated him when he challenged me to the most difficult part of Dr Bombay’s “Calcutta (Taxi Taxi Taxi)” at a dinner event at a 5-star resort witnessed by hundreds of people ;-)
